    This photo was probably taken on Acapulco beach in 1978 when Mike was the heavyweight class winner of the IFBB Mr Universe. Mike received a perfect score from the judges but was not happy with his condition.He stated that he had been much more ripped the day before the contest but eating lots of seafood had put too much sodium into his body causing mild fluid retention, which filled in his sharpest cuts.In future contests as a professional Mike carefully monitored salt and fluid intake when peaking.

    Mike had been favoured to win the 1977 Mr Universe but came second to Kalman Skalak.Mike was unhappy with the result as he had a more proportionate physique with superior calves and thighs, but the judges were dazzled by Kal's incredible upper body and superb high-peaked biceps.
