1980 Sergio Oliva Vs 1980 Arnold Schwarzenegger
By Strength Oldschool
Arnold wasn’t at his best in 1980 when he won the Mr Olympia. Sergio Oliva was looking pretty big during that year. Would Sergio have defeated Arnold if he had entered the 1980 Mr Olympia Contest? Your opinions please.
Please see comparison picts below which I mocked up.
Ray Nobile’s thoughts…
“No one was going to beat Arnold in 1980 due to the politics involved. This has and will be debated forever. Arnold had the Weider organisation behind him, also the judging panel consisted of his friends. He should have been in 5th place. Also he was the only competitor who didn't have to qualify for the Olympia. Weider got him a bye. Now back to the topic. Sergio at his best was unbeatable, Unfortunately he very seldom managed to peak in the big contests.” ~ Ray Nobile
Thoughts from Magnus…
“I agree with Ray. In 1974 Arnold was mind-boggling and unbeatable, but in 1980 he was nowhere near that size and I think was lucky to be in the top six but something (politics? Reputation blinding the judges? Commercial decision by Joe?) helped him win.
I think placed above Arnold should have been (not necessarily in this order) Mike Mentzer, Roy Callender, Roger Walker, Boyer Coe, Chris Dickerson, Frank Zane and maybe Dennis Tinnerino.
Sergio vs Arnold 1980 – definitely Sergio was better.
Sergio 1972 vs Arnold 1974 – I DON’T KNOW!
Arnold had better Biceps peak, Thicker more detailed back, denser harder physique and better posing.
Sergio had mind-boggling lat sweep with huge chest to tiny waist and hips, bigger arms (triceps) better forearms and more dramatic shape. For sheer rock-hard detailed mass pick Arnold, for incredible shape, immense arms and incredible lat flare pick Sergio. Who would I pick? Call it a draw!” ~ Magnus
